Long Material Storage — Pipe · Profile · Bar

Solutions ranging from manual racks to automated storage systems for pipes, profiles, bars (solid round stock) and bundled long materials. Selection is based on material length, bundle weight, whether full bundles or single pieces are retrieved, and the lifting equipment on site (overhead crane, forklift).

Manual racking

Telescopic Cantilever Rack
VLT-DKManual

Telescopic Cantilever Rack

  • 3–12 m long material; up to 6 t per rack
  • No permanent forklift aisle required, so storage density increases
  • Built-in stops prevent over-extension of the arms and damage to material
  • One-person operation; moving parts on ball bearings

3–12 m material length · 6 t per rack · Single / double-sided design

Recommended
Limited floor space and a need for vertical storage; Orderly storage of multi-size material, full or partial retrieval; Facilities with an overhead crane / KBK
Not recommended
Very short materials (a side-loading forklift is more suitable)
Technical table and description

The arms are pulled out and the material is lifted vertically with an overhead crane or KBK; the arm is then pushed back in. Available in single- and double-sided designs with manual (crank) or electric drive. Electric drive is recommended for loads above 5 tons.

  • 800–2600 kg per arm, 3000–5200 kg per level (with 2 supports)
  • Usable depth 600–900 mm single-sided, 400–1500 mm double-sided
  • Up to 8+1 levels single-sided and 16+1 double-sided (including top tier)
  • Material length up to 70 m; 1800 mm (single) / 4500 mm (double) between supports

Storage and retrieval method

  1. Pull out the arm with the crank or the electric control
  2. Lift the material vertically with the overhead crane or KBK
  3. Push the arm back in when finished

Compared with fixed cantilever racks: the support trays adapt to different material lengths, no forklift aisle is required and space utilization is higher.

Case studies

Twin-tower automated storage
Energy equipment · Transformer manufacturer

Twin-tower automated storage

Before: Many sizes of pipes and profiles were stacked on the floor, taking up valuable space in the new plant; the disorganized storage fell short of expectations during factory audits by overseas customers.

Solution: Twin-tower automated storage, 7.5 m high, with 15 levels and 5 tons of capacity per level; bundle and partial storage.

  • Over 50% less floor space for the same storage volume
  • A clearly zoned layout that meets high standards in customer audits
  • No more searching and lifting by hand from the floor
Single-tower automated storage
Special equipment · Sterilization equipment manufacturer

Single-tower automated storage

Before: 6/8/10 mm stainless steel sheets were stacked on the floor, taking up a lot of space, and real-time stock tracking was not possible.

Solution: Single tower, 8.5 m high, with 19 levels and 5 tons of capacity per level; separate bays for different sheet thicknesses and visual stock control.

  • Real-time stock accuracy
  • Over 70% less floor space
  • Retrieval time cut to minutes
Gantry automated storage
Profile processing · Aluminum profile manufacturer

Gantry automated storage

Before: 6 m aluminum profiles were stacked on the floor; material at the bottom could only be reached after the material on top had been moved.

Solution: 5.6 m gantry height, 65 m total rack length; over 600 kg per tray, with trays taken by forklift directly to the production line.

  • Storage volume in the same area maximized by using the available height
  • Storage and retrieval by a single operator
  • No restacking required

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which rack is suitable for pipe/profile?

If you have an overhead crane and pick partial quantities, a telescopic cantilever rack or honeycomb-type cassette rack is suitable; if you pick full bundles, a cassette profile rack is suitable. For bundles up to 1,000 kg per level, a manually pulled single-arm drawer-type profile rack is a practical solution.

Which rack is suitable for sheet metal?

We recommend a drawer-type sheet rack if you have an overhead crane and vacuum lifter; a forklift-tray sheet magazine if you have a forklift but no overhead crane; a compact sheet system for crane-free work at the machine; and a vertical sheet rack for manually handled sheets and remnants.

When should automated storage be chosen?

The higher the stock turnover, the more value automation delivers. For long material, a gantry, automated honeycomb or overhead-crane automated store is chosen; for sheet metal, an automated tower or automated vertical sheet store.

Do the racks need to be anchored to the floor?

Floor anchoring is required for drawer-type sheet racks, covered drawer-type profile racks and telescopic cantilever racks.

What information is needed for a quote?

Material type and dimensions, heaviest bundle/pack, number of SKUs, daily inbound/outbound volume, picking method (full / partial), overhead crane and forklift details, dimensions of the allocated area and building height.
